Laguna de Bay Sediment Group discusses detailed methodologies during the regular monthly meeting

The Laguna de Bay Sediment Group led by Dr. Naito Kensuke (ICHARM) continues the activities of the group with the collected samples from the Pagsanjan and Sta. Maria River. The meeting was conducted on February 9, 2023 followed by a continuation meeting on February 13, 2023 via Webex.
Dr. Naito was joined by Dr. Miho Ohara (Project Leader and Group 3 Leader) and Dr. Atsuhiro Yorozuya (Group 3 Member) from Japan and by Dr. Patricia Ann Sanchez, Dr. Roger Luyun, Jr., Dr. Aurelio A. Delos Reyes and Ms. Catherine B. Gigantone. Ms. Makiko Ohashi (Project Coordinator) and Mr. Julius Angelo Galang (Project Assistant) were also present.
The main agenda of the meeting was the research mapping presented by Dr. Naito which is divided into 3 study topics: Sediment run off from catchments to the lake; Sediment transport by hydrodynamic of the lake; and Monitoring of turbidity using Remote sensing. The sample collection and analysis is particularly needed for the first since it involves determining concentration of suspended sediments as well as the size distribution of bed material. Each of the sample collected have a duplicate in case of need to repeat analysis. Dr. Sanchez spearheaded the analysis of the 1st duplicates by the Analytical Services Laboratory in UP Los Banos while Dr. Luyun committed his Masters student (Ms. Eire Tagaban) to conduct the analysis on the 2nd duplicate.
The group also discussed administrative concerns such as the one who will take over from Dr. Delos Reyes upon his retirement in March: Dr. Rubenito Lampayan from the College of Engineering and Agro-Industrial Technology in UP Los Banos. The equipment needs for the activities were also discussed in order to prepare a purchase request for the coming fiscal year. Dr. Lampayan was then invited to the continuation meeting to be introduced to the sub group.
The team aims to accomplish the analyses of the samples soon and proceed with the next activities.
