Laguna de Bay Sediment Group conducts 1st meeting for 2023

The HyDEPP SATREPS project kicked off the year with a meeting by the Laguna de Bay Sediment subgroup under Group 3: Resilience Assessment. It was held on January 10, 2023 via Webex spearheaded by Dr. Naito Kensuke (Group 3 Member) from the International Center for Water Hazard and Risk Management (ICHARM) and attended both by Philippines and Japan members.
Attendees from the Philippines were Dr. Patricia Ann J. Sanchez (Project Manager and Group 3 Leader), Project Members Dr. Aurelio A. Delos Reyes, Jr., Dr. Roger A. Luyun, Jr., Dr. Jessica D. Villanueva-Peyraube, Dr. Janice B. Sevilla-Nastor, Dr, Loucel E. Cui and Dr. Decibel V. Faustino-Eslava and Ms. Catherine B. Gigantone, as well as Mr. Julius Angelo DJ. Galang (Project Assistant). Japan side on the other hand were attended by Dr. Ohara Miho (Project Leader), Dr. Kentaro Aida, Dr. Yorozuya Atsuhiro, Dr. Egashira Shinji and Dr. Menglu Qin.
Most of the attendees from the Philippines were also participants of the training in Japan last November-December 2022 and were able to meet with Dr. Naito regarding the activities of the subgroup. The discussions started with bed material sampling where there is a previous study by Dr. Cui, a new study plan by Dr. Villanueva-Peyraube and a possibility for another study by a student of Dr. Delos Reyes (i.e. for Master's thesis). All of which are expected to contribute to the overall output of the group.
This was followed by planning the next step for the collected samples from the Pagsanjan and Sta. Maria River last November and December 2022 (i.e. laboratory to conduct analysis). Following the sample collection, other equipment needed for the surveys int the river were discussed in terms of possibility to borrow from offices or need to purchase. Lastly, new students are still being considered to take part in the activities c/o Dr. Luyun and Dr. Sanchez. The meeting ended with most of the members having their own assignments and are expected to give update on the next meeting the following month.
