Laguna de Bay Sediment Group brings in students in the activities

October 13, 2022

During their fifth regular meeting, the Laguna de Bay Sediment group under Study 3: Resilience Assessment has finally brought in students to the activities through Dr. Eugene Herrera (UP Diliman) and Dr. Aurelio Delos Reyes, Jr. (UP Los Banos) who are the thesis advisers of the said students. The two students who attended the meeting were given an introduction of the entire efforts of the group in which they were allowed to choose a topic of their interest for their own studies.

The two newcomers to the meeting were Ms. Aiza Nieva and Mr. Efren Paul Arevalo who are both Masters Students and advisees of Dr. Delos Reyes. There are also two other students under Dr. Herrera who are both undergraduates but unable to attend the meeting. Japan side was represented in the meeting by Dr. Kensuke Naito, Dr. Aida Kentaro, Dr. Atsuhiro Yorozuya, Dr. Naoko Nagumo and Dr. Menglu Qin all from ICHARM.

Dr. Naito and Dr. Yorozuya started the meeting with an introduction of the Laguna de Bay Sediment group as well as its ongoing studies. One of the goals of the meeting was to match the students with potential topics and corresponding leaders. The 3 study components available are 1) sediment runoff from catchments by Dr. Roberto Soriano (UP Diliman and Dr. Qin), 2) sediment transport in the lake by Dr. Herrera and Dr. Naito and 3) monitoring with remote sensing by Dr. Delos Reyes and Dr. Aida. Both newcomers expressed interest on the 3rd component being led by their thesis adviser.

Dr. Herrera's undergraduate students, on the other hand, already have their own topics which may still potentially contribute to the efforts of the group. These topics are assessment of flood mapping using flood modeling for the Marikina River (also a target site of the project) and lake hydrodynamics with consideration of water hyacinth. Dr. Roberto Soriano (UP Diliman) and Dr. Patricia Sanchez (Project Manager) who were both not present during the meeting have also yes to bring in their students.

Each topic leaders plan to have separate meetings once in a while to plant and execute their activities. Dr. Herrera, in addition, mentioned the need for various measuring instruments needed in order for the activities to commence. Dr. Naito responded and shared with the group (via email) a list of instruments already approved for purchase and expected to be delivered to UPLB by the start of the following year. With this, Dr. Naito also called for discussion on which other instruments should be requested for the group.
