HyDEPP-SATREPS closes e-Learning session for 2022

August 25, 2022

The International Center for Water Hazard and Risk Management (ICHARM) and the UPLB Interdisciplinary Studies Center for Water (UPLB IdSC Water), together with the partner agencies DOST-PAGASA, DPWH, LLDA and MMDA gathered online for the last session of E-learning 2022 to officially close the training series. Project members as well as other invited participants were also present. Participants who were able to complete the courses (e.g. pass the exams/submit the assignment) were recognized and some were also asked to give comments/feedbacks on the training.

In his opening message, Dr. Fernando Sanchez, Jr. (Program Director, Philippine side) called for change on the current status of developing countries like the Philippines having "lower coping capacities to address the hazards posed by climate change". He remarked how completing the E-learning session is a "huge first step to contribute to strengthening our countries' climate resilience". He then proceeded to commend those who have successfully completed the courses.

Among the total of 93 registered participants to the training, 31 were able to complete all three courses while 14 completed two and 19 completed one as of the date. Some no longer took the exams since they were also participants from last year's session. However, completion of the three courses is still open until September 12, 2022, 5pm. Each were recognized with their names flashed on the screen. Dr. Miho Ohara (Project Leader, Japan side) also showed some notable works submitted by the participants for the course 2 assignments.

Participants whose works were shown and commended were Mr. John Paul S. Del Cruz (DPWH), Mr. Jessie R. Fortus (LLDA), Engr. Alvin Joseph Dolores and Engr. Keane Carlo G. Lomibao (UPLB), Engr. Maeve P. Taroy and Mr. Raymund Torres (MMDA) and Ms. Charmagne B. Varilla (PAGASA). They were also asked to give any comments or feedback regarding their experiences on completing the courses. Engr. Alvin Joseph Dolores, Engr. Keane Carlo G. Lomibao (UPLB) and Engr. Rosalita Barde (MMDA) responded to to this and shared which parts they enjoyed and which parts the found the most difficult. They also expressed their gratitude to ICHARM for organizing the training program.

At the last part, Dr. Koike Toshio (Executive Director, ICHARM) commented and summarized the entire preparation and execution of E-learning 2022. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between professionals of different expertise and various government agencies as well as effective communication with the community in addressing water-related issues. He also shared a recently conducted UN Conference on Water Action and remarked how some of the points discussed there were already being done by the HyDEPP SATREPS project.

As the project approaches the end of its second year, ICHARM and UPLB IdSC Water aims to realize the impacts of the project more.
