HyDEPP-SATREPS Unit 3D observes potential sites for instrument installation through a reconnaissance survey in Laguna de Bay

December 18, 2023

The HyDEPP-SATREPS Unit 3D (Sedimentation Group), through collaboration with the Laguna Lake Authority Development Authority (LLDA), had a reconnaissance survey last November 21st in a task to observe potential sites for turbidity and velocity sensor installation essential for monitoring the upcoming rainy season. Joining the activity includes Dr. Kensuke Naito (ICHARM) and LLDA staff Mr. Kim Mercado, Mr. Cruzadel T. Dela Cruz, Mr. Jessie R. Fortus, and Jonathan U. Nicolas (LLDA). Members from UPLB namely Dr. Janice Sevilla-Nastor, Dr. Roger A. Luyun, Jr., Dr. Alma Lorelei Abejero, Ms. Catherine B. Gigantone, Engr. Emmanuel Zeus S. Gapan, Engr. Christine Jane Ramacula, Mr. Paul Edrine Mapoy, Engr. Michael Jason L. Mozo (IDSCW staff), and JICA representatives Ms. Chihiro Mototani and Ms. Mariebel Dulay also participated in the field visit.

Three points were visited in the West Bay: near the mouth of Marikina River, in the middle of large-scale fish pens, and near the Lake Management Office of Muntinlupa with LLDA water level station. Each site has its advantages and disadvantages while target parameters such as sediment volume and water current are of concern. Since the sensors will be left on the site, the security of surrounding areas and sensor operations are being considered in the installation plans. Coordination with LGUs and caretakers were among the possible solutions but the team will still further discuss strategies to effectively install sensors.

The reconnaissance survey provided most of the project members with first exposure to the west side of Laguna de Bay. Through this activity, the HyDEPP-SATREPS Unit 3D team looks forward to instrument installation and collaboration with LLDA in future activities.
