Laguna de Bay Sediment Group meets for regular meeting

July 28, 2023

The Laguna de Bay Sediment Group resumed its regular meeting last July 19, 2023 to discuss the next visit of ICHARM researchers in September this year and for students involved in the unit group to give updates on their respective studies. Present at the meeting were Dr. Kensuke Naito and Dr. Menglu Qin (ICHARM) from the Japanese side while Dr. Patricia Ann J. Sanchez (Project Manager), Dr. Rubenito M. Lampayan (Group 2 Leader), Dr. Aurelio Delos Reyes, Jr. (Group 2 Member), and Dr. Roger A. Luyun, Jr. (Group 3 Member) from the Philippines side. Additionally, the meeting was attended by Ms. Atsuko Himeno (Project Coordinator), Forester Rochelle Lantican (Project Assistant), and Dr. Luyun’s students: Mr. Romedciel Alimurong (undergraduate student), Engr. Dhoz Arizabal (MS student) and Engr. Glaiza Visitacion (PhD student).

The group first discussed plans for their visit in September 2023, specifically scheduling site visits and field surveys in the Laguna area, arranging a workshop with project members and students, and meeting with LLDA and Dr. Eugene Herrera of UP Diliman. The group also looks forward to organizing training on RSR modeling during the ICHARM stay in the Philippines.

Second part of the meeting was the presentation of the students' study plans associated with the Laguna de Bay Sediment Group. Engr. Visitacion presented her study outline on land use assessment and climate change impact considering sediment aspects using the rainfall-sediment-runoff (RSR) model. On the other hand, Engr. Arizabal introduced his streamflow and sediment characterization plan with SWAT+ and RRI as proposed models. Mr. Alimurong also reported his study outline on flow velocity using particle image velocimetry. The project members, including Dr. Qin whose field of specialization includes RSR modeling, gave their comments and suggestions.

The Laguna de Bay Sediment Group looks forward to visiting the Philippines and conducting field surveys, workshops, and training with other project members and students.
