Laguna de Bay Sedimentation Group carries out field surveys in Pagsanjan river

July 14, 2023

The Laguna de Bay Sedimentation Group conducted its field survey last June 23, 2023 in Pagsanajan River to collect sediment and water samples, and to measure water level. The activity was joined by Dr. Kensuke Naito (Unit D Leader), Dr. Patricia Ann J. Sanchez (Project Manager), Dr. Rubenito M. Lampayan (Study 2 Leader), Dr. Roger A. Luyun, Jr. (Study 1 Leader), Dr. Naoko Nagumo, Dr. Aurelio A. Delos Reyes, Jr., Dr. Mona Liza F. Delos Reyes, Dr. Alma Lorelei Abejero, Dr. Joan Cecilia C. Casila, Ms. Catherine B. Gigantone, Ms. Atsuko Himeno (JICA Project Coordinator), Forester Rochelle M. Lantican (Project Assistant), and staffs from UPLB Interdisciplinary Studies Center for Water. The field survey was also participated by Ms. Glaiza Visitacion (UPLB Ph.D. student), Mr. Dhoz Arizobal (UPLB MS student), Mr. Gen David Magbual (UP Diliman MS student), and Mr. Romedciel Alimurong (UPLB undergraduate student).

The first site visited was the Pagsanjan Bridge where the team was divided into two groups to collect water samples and measure the water level from a bridge with a known elevation. This was followed by a sediment and water collection from dredged materials at a riverside in Lumban, Laguna. The third and last area sampled was back in Pagsanjan where water and sediments were gathered, pictures of large sediments with scale were taken, and a drone shot was made to have a larger view of the river.

After the field survey, the team also visited Laguna State Polytechnic University Los Baños (LSPU-LB) and made a short visit to University Regeant, Dr. Chester Alexis Buama. Different facilities relevant to fisheries and laboratories were shown to the HyDEPP team.

On the next day, Dr. Naito had a workshop to discuss the processing of samples and analysis of pictures collected from the field survey. The students were introduced to two software namely Basegrain and iRIC (hydraulic analysis software) and had hands-on training to process the pictures of sediments and measured the water level, respectively. Apart from data processing and analysis, the workshop provided an avenue for project members to identify the potential involvement of students in the Laguna de Bay Sediment Group while working on their respective thesis works.

The project group looks forward to future field surveys and collaborations with other project members and students.
