Laguna de Bay Sediment Group discusses incoming Philippine survey and Japan field survey training

May 3, 2023

The Laguna de Bay Sediment Group under Study 3: Resilience Assessment met via Zoom on April 28, 2023 to discuss the field survey plans and Japan field survey training this year. Present within the group were Dr. Kensuke Naito (ICHARM), Dr. Patricia Ann Sanchez (Study Leader Group 3), Dr. Roger Luyun Jr. (Group 2 Member), Dr. Aurelio Delos Reyes, Jr. (Study Leader Group 2), and Dr. Rubenito Lampayan (Group 2 Member). The meeting was also attended by Ms. Makiko Ohashi (JICA Project Coordinator) and Forester Rochelle Lantican (Project Assistant).

The group first discussed the field survey training in Japan which will highlight discharge measurement. In detail, the members considered preferred dates, periods of training, and other topics to be covered and conducted. Participants are expected to apply different techniques related to discharge measurement, perform it by themselves, and echo it internally to their respective organizations.

The second topic discussed was the field survey in the Philippines. Dr. Naito encouraged the members to continue field surveys in Laguna de Bay such as discharge measurement, sediment sampling on the river bed, and extending the survey area to the lake itself even though equipment hasn’t arrived yet. Moreover, Dr. Naito shared that he and Dr. Herrera have plans to install turbidity sensors in the study site but consideration is needed. For instance, a company to secure and install the equipment. In studying river tributaries, the group plans to use a current meter and mobile installed with Dr. Yasukawa’s program to determine river velocity.

The group also discussed Dr. Luyun Jr.'s Master's student who would like to be involved in the Laguna de Bay study. To better know the student’s interests, the group plans to hold another meeting in early May to give background on HyDEPP-SATREPS and determine the interests of Dr. Luyun’s advisees.
