Offices and academe participate in online RRI Modeling Training by HYDEPP-SATREPS

December 18, 2023

The HyDEPP-SATREPS Project organized the online Rainfall-Runoff-Inundation (RRI) Modeling Training on November 21, 2023 with a total of 37 participants from the National Irrigation Administration (NIA), Pampanga Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), Davao del Sur State College (DSSC), and International Centre for Water Hazard and Risk Management under the auspices of UNESCO (ICHARM). Project members, Dr. Mohamed Rasmy Abdul Wahid (Group 2 Leader) and Dr. Shrestha Badri Bhakta led the training by providing lectures and hands-on training, respectively.

Dr. Rasmy started with the basics of flood hazard models, emphasizing the concept of hydrology, water budget, and different hydrological processes that affect runoff and discharge. In addition, he discussed the different hydrological models that mirror several elements and processes of the hydrological cycle, highlighting the concept and components of the rainfall-runoff-inundation model.

Dr. Shrestha led the hands-on tutorial on flood simulation using the RRI model. Using the Pampanga River Basin flood data, he provided a step-by-step guide starting from RRI model setup, running the simulation, to viewing results and calibration of the model’s parameters.

A Q&A session at the end of the activity provided an opportunity to clarify and solve issues encountered by the trainees during their simulations.

The HyDEPP-SATREPS Project hopes participants to apply gained lessons and skills on RRI in their present and future professions.
